They call the Walker Complex food court Hungry Badger for a reason — we’re busy students and we need to eat! BUSU and Sobeys Glendale are partnered up to provide us hungry students with a complimentary shuttle to get our groceries. If you’re living in rez, the Lofts, or even just have difficulty getting to the grocery store without a car, this is an invaluable resource. This post will provide you with all the details of the shuttle, and some of my favourite quick snacks to stock up on.

First, the shuttle. It runs every Tuesday night, starting from Isaacs’ patio at 6pm. It then makes it’s way to Village, Quarry View, the Lofts, and then Sobeys at 344 Glendale Ave. The return trips back to Brock start at 7:10pm, with the last pickup at 9:30pm. All the times that the bus runs to and from Brock are listed at http://www.brockbusu.ca/services/grocery-shuttle/, along with the specific dates of each Tuesday that the shuttle is running.

Perhaps the best part of the grocery shuttle is that students get 10% off their items, if they show their student card and the free-to-register Sobey’s Air Miles Card. So with that 10% off, here’s some great items I recommend you pick up!

  • Fruits and veggies, always. It helps prevent that student scurvy. I know that fresh produce can be expensive, so make use of that 10% discount. My favourite fruits are green apples and strawberries, but always look for what’s in season.
  • Granola bars make a great healthy snack to throw in your backpack in case you get hungry in class. I’m a huge fan of Kashi dark chocolate coconut granola bars.
  • Cereal is a great go-to when you have the time for a bowl with milk in the morning, or to throw into a ziploc bag dry when you don’t. My favourite versatile cereal is Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but there’s always more healthy alternatives for those who are so inclined.
  • If you’re in the mood for something sweet, a mug cake is always great for people — like me — who aren’t exactly a chef de cuisine. Recipes vary, but I like to have the basics — flour, eggs, sugar — on hand, as well as cocoa powder, peanut butter, Nutella, cinnamon and other yummy flavours to make your fave. Buzzfeed is a great resource to find a recipe. PB and Nutella are also great fillers for a sandwich on the go.
  • Finally, I’ve gotta recommend the quintessential student food — boxed pasta. If you’re not in the mood for Kraft Dinner though, I recomend Annie’s macaroni in white cheddar, or this buzzfeed article (https://www.buzzfeed.com/emmacooke24/how-to-upgrade-your-instant-ramen?utm_term=.aa8GqmXy9#.fyd59KoPJ) of 21 ways to upgrade your instant ramen.

Definitely making use of this service, Badgers. It’s great for your health and to keep you out of the fast-food-dining-hall-freshman-15 rut. Let us at Student Powered know what your favourite finds and recipes are, and make sure to tell your friends a) about the shuttle and b) when you find things on sale.

Happy shopping!
