Welcome back to another school year! I hope that everyone has found a way to get back into the swing of busy university life! We’ve gotten through two of the busiest weeks during Fall Semester, O-Week and Homecoming, but the party doesn’t end there! Today, I want to talk about looking good when you don’t have as much money as you would like. Let’s be honest for a moment, students aren’t rich. Well, most of us aren’t. We are constantly surrounded by fantastic companies that carry amazing products, but it simply isn’t possible on a student budget! There are many ways that students can stretch their dollars to have heads turning in the halls without completely blowing their budget.
1. Take advantage of student discounts.
We are fortunate to live in a city that is proud of the students that live here. There are many stores that offer student discounts, and all you have to do is show your student card. In addition, VIB Cards come in very handy when it comes to saving a few extra dollars. 10% may not seem like a lot, but it adds up! You can put that money you saved towards textbooks, rent, or a fun night out!
2. There is nothing wrong with learning to make your own clothing!
Learning to sew is a great way to create the looks you want, at a super cheap price. You are in control of the fit, the colour, and just about every aspect of whatever you can put your mind to making. While it can be time consuming, designing your own clothes is very rewarding because you get to produce unique items that only you own!
3. Always browse the clearance sections in stores and online.
Clearance items are great “add on” items. By adding clearance items on to your outfit, you can add your own flair for super cheap! Accessorizing your outfits is always a great idea. Belts, necklaces, bracelets! Clearance is a great – not to mention cheap – way to add items to your collection.
4. Avoid spending large amounts of money for the sake of owning name brands.
Let’s face it, we all want to look like we just stepped off of a runway at New York Fashion Week. The reality is that splurging on expensive brands isn’t wise, no matter how good you look! There is nothing wrong with treating yourself to something nice every now and then, but you don’t need to buy yourself an expensive item all the time!
5. “If you don’t love it in the store, you won’t love it when you take it home”
Never fall victim to buying an item that you feel conflicted about because it will sit in your room and collect dust! This is one of the easiest ways to waste your money, you may as well light a $20 on fire!
6. Good ol’ thifting!
Thrift shopping is something that is growing increasingly popular as the years go by. Shopping at thrift stores is a great way to find amazing items that are gently-loved for cheap prices. Thrift shopping can be tedious and it can get overwhelming because thrift shops don’t carry full size run like retail stores, but thrifting is an amazing way to save some cash, but still show off your own unique style. Also, if you are into DIYs, thrifting is right up your ally because you can turn a cheap, used item into something new and unique!
These are just a few pointers that I have on how I believe students can look their best on campus without spending all their student loans on clothes! Know of any ways that you can get runway looks while spending pennies? Let us know below! Have a fun and stylish weekend, badgers!
