Hey Badgers!

With Thanksgiving and Reading week coming up fast, many students are planning to head home for the holiday. For some, it’s the first time being home this school year. What sounds better than sleeping in your own bed, home-made food and family time? There’s nothing quite like the feeling of home sweet home.

Well, here’s some tips on how to bring that feeling back to school with you, and how to make your living space here in Niagara feel like home!

It’s important to have a bit of familiarity when it comes to living somewhere new. Whether you’re on residence or in a student house, it’s important to create a space that makes you feel comfortable and at home. And what’s the best way to do that? Well, if you haven’t already taken a look at Pinterest or browsed through Tumblr, then here’s some tips:

1. Decorate it however you want!

Those plain walls and carpeted floors can get depressing after awhile. Nothing makes a room feel more like home than by adding your own personal touches. Look into different colour schemes, pick out the perfect lampshade or even find yourself the perfect bed-set. These personal details can make any room feel a little cozier, and it doesn’t have to cost much either!

There are tons of DIY projects for dorm room decor, all of which can be beneficial to your budget. If you’re looking into putting up pictures of your friends and family, there are tons of affordable and creative ways to post them up on your walls!

Simple ideas such as that can make your room feel more like home!

2. Make the most of your space.

Whether you’re in a residence room or a house with 6 other students, it’s safe to say that you need to make the most out of the space you have. There are many ways to keep things minimal, including multi-purpose furniture and organizers! Under your bed is always a great place to put organizers and bins to keep your clothes organized!

3. Learn how to make your favourite meals.

You can only live on Kraft Dinner for so long. With busy schedules and typical school craziness, it’s always hard to fit in the time to do some cooking.

Sometimes, nothing makes you feel better than making the same meals you used to eat at family dinners. Find the time during the week to prepare these yummy meals and then save them in tupperware for the rest of the week! That way, when you get home from a long day of classes and are too tired to make anything to eat, you have a home-made meal that can be heated up and ready in minutes!

4. Keep things clean!

Even though there’s no one here to nag you about it, it’s always important to take the time and keep your space clean. Things can easily get disorganized when you’re running around and keeping busy, but a clean space leads to a clean state of mind.

It’s as simple as pulling out the vacuuming or washing your sheets, simple things like this can keep you feeling comfortable at home.

And for those who can’t seem to get rid of that ‘student-house’ smell, here’s a simple hack for you! Instead of spending money on candles or room fresheners, put a simple dryer sheet in your vent! This ensures the room smells good, and it lasts a lot longer than room fresheners or deodorizes.

So enjoy your break and Thanksgiving, Badgers! Relax, spend time with the family and maybe catch up on some homework, but don’t forget to follow these simple tips to ensure that you come back from the break still feeling at home!
