How Not To Get Stuck With a Horrible Roommate

So it’s that time of the year again, Badgers, where (if you live off campus or about to live off campus) the yearly leases are expiring and we’re on the hunt for roommates.

We all have stories of horrible roommates that make us lose our faith in humanity (and if you don’t: lucky you!) so here are some tips for picking your potential new roommates for next year.

#1 – Should you and your BFF room together?

Now, I know rooming with your best friend seems the practical choice. BUT, you might want to think about what kind of roommate they are. You guys might get along perfectly well when you’re not sharing the same small space together, but what if they’re super messy and you’re not? Or what if they don’t understand the concept of personal space (#clingy)? You don’t want to lose a perfectly good friendship just because you guys are incompatible roommates.

#2 – Schedules, schedules, schedules

You want to make sure that you and your roommate have compatible schedules in the sense that there should be some blocks of time where they’re at school and you’re not; so that you can get a quite house to do whatever (like sleeping…or other stuff). If you’re constantly bumping into each other, that can create tension.

# 3 – Talk it out

Good communication is a must for all relationships, but specifically, you should talk everything out with your roommate BEFORE you sign a lease together. For example, school schedules, chore lists, sleeping schedules, shared items, etc… you don’t want to go into something like this blind.

#4 – Make sure you at least like your roommate

Roommates should be people that you get along with and have similar living habits with. Make sure you at least like your roommate and have something in common with them (like similar taste in TV shows/movies) so that when you guys have to spend time together at home, you’re not dreading it.

So I hope you found some of these helpful! If you have any of your own, or even some roommate horror stories, comment down below and let us know!
