What Working for BUSU Can Offer You

Posted by on March 20, 2017

Hi Badgers!

As many of you know, BUSU is hiring students to fill a ton of positions for the 2017-2018 school year and I wanted to take a moment to discuss what working for our student union offers students and why it’s more than just a paycheque. This year, I had the opportunity to work multiple jobs with the student union: Campaigns Coordinator with the Student Justice Centre, a Cashier at General Brock & I’m also the current editor for the Student Powered Blog. In my time working with the Student’s Union, here’s a few things I’ve noticed offered to students.

Opportunity to develop your skills:

Regardless of where you work, whether it be in the BUSU Office or in Union Station, there’s always an opportunity to expand the amount of skills you have under your belt. From training opportunities, learning proper health & safety standards for your work environment, etc. BUSU’s diverse job list features jobs that cater to both the personal and career interests of students. Why not spend the year building those skills that could benefit your future?

Learning to work better in team settings:

Team work is important, and while we all hate group assignments in classes – it’s different in a work environment. At BUSU, employees work close with the exec team & coworkers to ultimately better the school environment for students and the campus community; whether that be running awareness campaigns or finding ways to increase the sustainability of the campus with reusable products.

Meeting new friends:

You spend so much time with your co-workers that you eventually become friends. If you can make it through the stressful O-Week period, you can make it through anything.

A job that works around your schedule:

There’s no denying the fact that we all have busy schedules. Being students, especially if you do extracurricular activities, can make finding certain positions hard due to the stress of balancing the two. Ever since I started working with BUSU, my schedule has always worked around my classes and has never been overwhelming, as school is prioritized.

Working with the Student’s Union here at Brock isn’t just a great way to make money, but it’s a great way to get involved and learn more about Brock while building skills that will benefit you in the future. Take a chance and apply, and join a great team of people. There are already quite a few posted and a couple more positions to come!
